Since 2022, Rabbi Laurie Matzkin has served as Chief Jewish Experience Officer at the Peninsula Jewish Community Center (PJCC) in Foster City, California, where she leads initiatives that integrate Jewish learning, culture, spirituality, wellness, and community engagement. Throughout her career, she has designed and led Jewish educational experiences for all ages, including B'nai Mitzvah programs, family education, adult learning seminars, summer camps, Israel trips, conversion programs, retreats, and lifecycle experiences.
Rabbi Matzkin studied Music (Flute Performance) and Jewish Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, and received Rabbinic Ordination, a Master's Degree in Experiential Education, and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management for Rabbis from the AJU/Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles. She is a graduate of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality's Clergy Leadership Program and a current Rukin Rabbinic Fellow for 18Doors.
Previously, Rabbi Matzkin served as Director of Lifelong Learning at Congregation Kol Emeth in Palo Alto, Family Educator for PJ Library in Silicon Valley, Mindful Jewish Journeys Educator for the Los Gatos JCC, and Rabbi of The Villages Jewish Group in San Jose. She has consulted with numerous Jewish organizations, including Hadassah, JCRC, Yavneh Day School, Camp JCA Shalom, PJ Library and JCC preschools. Rabbi Matzkin served for four years on the Executive Committee of the Northern California Board of Rabbis and was a founding faculty member of the Embodied Jewish Wisdom Teachers Network. Before rabbinical school, she spent two years engaging Jewish college students across several campuses through the work of Hillel of Greater Philadelphia.
Personal
Laurie is a fifth Generation Bay Area native. After living in Bloomington, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Vienna, and Jerusalem, she returned to the Bay Area in 2009 and has been active in Jewish communities throughout the Peninsula and South Bay ever since. She lives with her husband, a beloved local Jewish educator, and their two sons. Laurie enjoys farmers markets, tucked-away nature spots, and cultural escapes. She has played the flute since 3rd grade and loves bringing music into Shabbat services in a variety of settings and styles.
